King and Joshua Fouts of Dancing Ink Productions and Lawrence Pintak of the American University in Cairo. Broadcast quality machinima created by Ill Clan Animation Studios. The video was filmed in AUC's virtual newsroom in Second Life and came out of a summit that brought together bloggers and online journalists from the Arab world, Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Funded by the USAID, the goal was allow Arab participants to learn from the experiences of those working in a wide variety of countries that recently emerged from or are emerging from controlled media environments. One story that the whole world is dealing with these days is swine flu. In Cairo, the government has ordered that every single pig be killed. For that, we turned to Jay Bernhardt and Glenn Nowak of the CDC -- the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who joined us in the AUC virtual newsroom. In January 2009 a group of eight Egyptian political bloggers including the well-known Wael Abbas, met with James K. Glassman then the US Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, in the virtual newsroom of the American University in Cairo in Second Life. The documentary is part of a broader collaborative project between Dancing Ink Productions and the American University in Cairo exploring how virtual worlds can be used to augment journalistic goals globally, cut costs and enhance and deepen the interview process by providing access to often hard-to-reach subjects. The project is directed by veteran American journalist and long-time Middle East correspondent Lawrence Pintak, head of the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Research and Training at the American University in Cairo, and produced in collaboration with Dancing Ink Productions and Ill Clan Animation Studios with funding from USAID.
